A Clinical Analysis of Breast Cancer



Abstract
This report is a retrospective analysis of 113 patients of breast cancer, histologically confirmed and surgically resected during the period from 1980 to 1990 at department of General Surgery, Pusan Paik Hospital, Inje University.
1) Male breast cancer is only one case.
2) Age distribution showed peak incidence at fifth decade(31.9%) with mean age of 48.
3) Main clinical manifestation was palpable mass on breast(98%) and 70% of the patients visited hospital within 6 months of symptom onset.
4) Right sided tumor was 60 cases and Left was 53 cases, and upper outer quadrant was the most prevalent site of the breast(44.2%).
5) Pathologically, 101 cases(89%) were diagnosed to be infiltrating ductal carcinoma, the next was Paget's disease of the nipple.
6) III cases were confirmed before mastectomy and two cases were diagnosed intraoperatively by frozed section.
7) According to TNM classification, stage II was 59 cases(52.2%) and III, I IV was 32(28.3%). 15(13.3%) and 7(6.2%), respectively.
8) In surgical procedure modified radical mastectomy was performed in 65 patients and standard radical mastectomy was done in 31 patients, simple mastectomy or lumpectomy was used for stage IV cancer.
9) 53 patients(55%) of 96 axillary dissections showed metastatic nodes.
10) During follow up 25 patients developed distant metastasis to lung bone and liver as major sites.
11) 5 year survival rates in 31 patients of radical mastectomy done from 1980 to 1985 was 68.3%, calculated using Caplan-Meier method.
